Small spaces. Big impact.

Backyard Small Builds

Let’s work together

Backyard Builds bridges local education and community development by offering affordable, custom-built small structures—such as home offices, recording studios, and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)—crafted offsite in part by local students gaining hands-on trade skills, and delivered to your property.

By constructing offsite in a controlled shop environment, students learn construction, carpentry, electrical, and finishing trades under expert supervision. Once complete, the structures are transported and installed directly on your property with minimal site disruption.

The Win-Win Model

For Property Owners

  • Cost Efficiency: Lower labor costs make small-scale additions significantly more accessible than traditional contractor builds.
  • Minimal Site Disruption: Because construction happens offsite, you avoid weeks of heavy foot traffic, noise, and debris in your yard.
  • Community Impact: Your project directly funds hands-on vocational training and local workforce development in the Charlottesville area.

For Students & Instructors

  • Real-World Application: Students work with real architectural blueprints, materials, and code guidelines rather than mock exercises.
  • Controlled Environment: Building offsite in a dedicated workshop allows for safe, year-round, high-quality instruction regardless of weather.
  • Career Preparation: Provides portfolio-ready experience, trade certifications, and direct pathways into local trade careers.

How It Works: From Shop to Yard

  1. Design & Permitting Consultation: Choose from standard modular footprints or custom options. We guide you through Charlottesville/Albemarle County zoning and building requirements.
  2. Offsite Workshop Build: Students, supervised by licensed tradespeople and instructors, frame, weather-seal, wire, and finish the structure in our shop.
  3. Site Preparation: While the structure is being built, site prep (pad/piers, leveling, utility access) is coordinated on your property.
  4. Delivery & Installation: The completed structure is transported to your property, set onto its foundation, hooked up to power, and given a final quality inspection.
